Success Story
Dog training in a busy apartment in Jacksonville
Gus and Skye live with their mom in a very active apartment building. The hallways, elevators, and constant noise made daily life overstimulating for both dogs.
See how we built structure, confidence, and calm behavior in a busy apartment home.

DOGS
Gus
2-year-old Golden Retriever
Skye
3-month-old Australian Shepherd
[…] When we first started training I thought we were doomed but both of our dogs behavior has changed so much and it is so much easier to walk them on a leash now and do basic activities with them thanks to Jorge!

Challenges
What dog training challenges did we face?
All dog training situations are unique, and this one was no different.
Gus
- Heavy leash pulling
- Gets overly excited around people and dogs
- Jumps on guests
- Has trouble calming down
Skye
- Potty training problems
- Mild separation anxiety
- Whines or barks in the crate
- Easily overstimulated in hallways
- No structure yet (typical for a young puppy)
Initial assessment
How were things when we arrived?
With all of our dog training clients, we like to start by evaluating the environment first.
What Mom Was Accidentally Reinforcing
- Petting the dogs when they were overly excited
- Comforting whining or anxious behavior
- Responding emotionally to crying in the crate
- Giving affection during jumping
- Allowing excited greetings instead of calm ones
- Gentle leash handling that made Gus feel unsure
These are very common, loving behaviors, but they can make excited or anxious dogs even more excited or anxious.
Training Approach
Our tailored dog training plan
Jorge focused on building structure, confidence, and calm routines for both dogs and Mom.
Loose-Leash Walking
#1
- Teaching each dog to walk calmly beside Mom
- Practicing focus instead of pulling
- Using simple direction changes and encouragement
- Keeping walks structured, not chaotic
Greeting Manners
#2
- Teaching Gus to sit instead of jump
- Rewarding calm moments only
- Practicing quiet, polite door greetings
Crate & Potty Training
#3
- Setting a consistent schedule
- Helping Skye relax in the crate
- Ignoring demand barking
- Rewarding calm behavior
- Practicing short separations to build confidence
Reducing Over-Excitement
#4
- Working around hallway triggers at a comfortable distance
- Teaching both dogs to be neutral around other dogs and people
- Using Place for calmness and confidence
- Preventing excitement from building up instead of waiting until it explodes
The important part
Parent coaching for consistency
Jorge spent a lot of time coaching Mom, because long-term success depends on how the dogs are led every day.
What Mom learned:
- How to stay calm and confident so the dogs follow her energy
- When to give affection (only during calm moments)
- How to stop rewarding whining or jumping
- How to keep greetings peaceful
- How to lead walks with structure
- How to create predictable daily routines
- How to help both dogs relax instead of constantly reacting
Once Mom became consistent, both dogs improved much faster.

Sit Happens is the leading dog training provider in the Jacksonville area, and we also proudly serve Tampa and St. Augustine. But we’re more than just another dog trainer— we’ve earned our reputation for a reason. While typical training might focus on getting your dog to follow commands, we go beyond the basics. Our approach is all about your dog’s overall wellbeing, helping them feel comfortable in their environment and strengthening their bond with you.
We make sure you and your family are part of the process, giving you hands-on lessons and exercises to practice with your dog between sessions. This way, you’re not just teaching your dog commands— you’re building an unbreakable bond with your furry friend.
Yes. Each of our trainers goes through a rigorous 90-day certification course. We only hire trainers with extensive prior experience who pass our thorough vetting process. Each of our trainers also carries their own professional accreditations and affiliations. They are required to undergo 100+ hours of continued education each year to stay up-to-date on the latest science-backed methods.
Of course. One major advantage of private training is that it fits into your lifestyle. Other training services make you drive to a facility on a strict schedule and charge extra for the flexibility of in-home lessons. At Sit Happens, all of our training plans are designed to work within your schedule.
Yes, we can either train each of your dogs individually or hold private group sessions with all of your dogs together. Each of our trainers can work with up to five dogs at a time.
Yes. In order to keep you, your dog, and your trainer safe, we kindly ask that you ensure that your dog has received all their vaccinations.
Yes, the cost of private dog training is comparable to group dog training, yet it’s twice as effective. In a group training setting, your dog has to overcome the distraction of other dogs they don’t know while still trying to learn the basics. Private training offers an array of additional benefits, including flexible scheduling, personalized lessons, and one-on-one attention from the trainer.
